We have a start-to-finish therapy kit that will give you everything you need to practice this skill in therapy and send home homework.  Click the packet below to open it.  Then, print it out and place it in the child’s notebook or binder.

Therapy Phases:

  1. Periods: Client will pause and use correct intonation (falling pitch) when encountering a period during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  2. Question Mark: Client will pause and use correct intonation (rising pitch for yes/no questions, falling pitch for other questions) when encountering a question mark during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  3. Exclamation Mark: Client will add correct emphasis (such as by making the sentence louder or speaking more excitedly) when encountering an exclamation mark during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  4. Comma: Client will add a short pause when encountering a comma during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  5. Colon with List: Client will use correct pausing and intonation (pause at the colon, rising pitch on every list item except for the last, which gets falling pitch) when encountering a colon followed by a list during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  6. Semicolon: Client will add a pause when encountering a semicolon during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  7. Quotations: Client will pause before and after an utterance enclosed in quotation marks and provide correct intonation as needed (using a different voice if necessary) when encountering quotation marks during a read aloud activity on at least 80% of observed opportunities.
  8. Mixed Punctuation: Client will demonstrate correct pausing and intonation when reading a short passage that includes the following types of punctuation on at least 80% of observed opportunities: question mark, exclamation mark, period, comma, colon with a list, semicolon, and quotation marks.

What’s Next?

  • Once the client is able to demonstrate all of the correct prosody with reading fluency during these structured tasks, you can begin to encourage appropriate prosody in reading fluency during academic or school readings as well.
