Identify if a Child is Ready (Based on cognition and communication):

  • Is the child able to initiate interactions (must have this to ask to use the restroom or initiate the action)?
  • Is the child able to communicate that he needs to use the bathroom (AAC if not speech)?
  • Is the child at a cognitive level to understand toileting (a child functioning at a 6-month level is not cognitively ready)?

If Child is Ready…

Help Create the Communication Portion of the System:

  • Figure out how the child will communicate that he needs to use the bathroom
  • Figure out how the child will communicate that he is done
  • Figure out how the child will communicate that he needs help in the bathroom

Help Teach the Routine:

  • Write a social story which outlines the steps and what the child will do.  Include how he will communicate the above-mentioned pieces
  • Create visual aids to help the child remember the steps
  • Walk the child through the steps and provide assistance for communication and following directions as needed
