Here are some great goal ideas to get you started with writing goals for voice therapy.  Be sure to customize these to meet the specific needs of your clients.

 

Medical Setting:

LONG TERM GOALS:

  • The pt will be able to effectively communicate wants/needs and thoughts/ideas with little to no impact from voice deficits.
  • The pt will be able to participate in activities of daily living with little to no impact from chronic cough/throat clearing.

SHORT TERM GOALS:

  1. The pt will independently comply with vocal hygiene measures to maximize vocal environment 90% of the time.
  2. The pt will independently complete and use laryngeal relaxation techniques to decrease laryngeal tension with 85% accuracy.
  3. The pt will independently complete tasks targeting diaphragmatic breathing to maximize vocal output with 85% accuracy.
  4. The pt with independently complete tasks targeting easy onset to reduce glottal attacks with 85% accuracy.

School Setting:

Vocal Hygiene:

Goal:
By the end of the IEP cycle, the student will independently comply with the following objectives in order to maximize the vocal environment on 3 out of 4 data collection days.

Objectives:

  • The student will drink 3 (12 oz) bottles of water throughout the day as measured by self-reporting (the SLP or teacher will check in at the end of the day to ask the child) OR  The student will drink 3 (12 oz) bottles of water throughout the day as measured by the classroom teacher using a water intake checklist.
  • During a 30-minute observation (conducted by the teacher or SLP), Student will have one or fewer episodes of vocal abuse in 3 of 4 different observation times/settings.

Voice Strategies:

Goal:
By the end of the IEP cycle, the student will independently master the following objectives to target resonance for improved vocal function in the therapy setting.

Objectives:

  • The student will independently transition between frontal focus to laryngeal focus on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate adequate resonance (frontal focus) when humming on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate adequate resonance (frontal focus) when saying /m/ syllables on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate adequate resonance (frontal focus) when saying /m/ words on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate adequate resonance (frontal focus) when saying /m/ sentences on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.

By the end of the IEP cycle, the student will independently master the following objectives to target vocal approach for improve vocal function in the therapy setting.

Objectives:

  • The student will independently demonstrate easy onset when humming on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate easy onset when saying /m/ syllables on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate easy onset and offset when saying /m/ words on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate easy onset and offset when saying /m/ sentences on 9 out of 10 trials in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.

Breathing:

Goal:
By the end of IEP cycle, the student will demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing within the therapy setting at rest and when talking to support vocal output by mastering the following objectives.

Objectives

  • The student will independently demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing in a supine position for 2 minutes in the therapy setting on 2 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing at rest (no voice) in the sitting position for 2 minutes in the therapy setting on 2 consecutive days.
  • The student will independently demonstrate diaphragmatic breathing during when voicing in the sitting position for 10 minutes in the therapy setting on 3 consecutive days.
