Goal: Navigate Disagreements with Peers

Sample Goal:

Client will navigate a disagreement with a peer by completing the following steps on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities, with visual cues and adult verbal support as needed: listen to what everyone wants, brainstorm potential solutions, find out why each person wants what they want, choose a solution that everyone accepts.

Therapy Phases:

  1. Answer Questions about Social Story: After listening to a social story about navigating disagreements, client will answer comprehension questions about the steps for navigating a disagreement with at least 80% accuracy.
  2. Role Play: Client will role play through navigating a staged disagreement by completing the following steps with another person on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities, using visual cues as needed. Steps to Navigating a Disagreement: listen to what everyone wants, brainstorm potential solutions, find out why each person wants what they want, choose a solution that everyone accepts. 
  3.  Navigate a Real Disagreement: Client will navigate a disagreement with a peer by completing the following steps on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities, with visual cues and adult verbal support as needed: listen to what everyone wants, brainstorm potential solutions, find out why each person wants what they want, choose a solution that everyone accepts. 

What’s Next?

  • This is a skill that most children with continue to need to work on throughout their lives.  Even as adults we sometimes need to hire a mediator to help us navigate disagreements.  You can continue to support a client is using this skill throughout his/her daily life by providing the visual steps or posting them in common spaces and being available to be a mediator when needed.  It’s important for children to feel like they have safe adults in their lives that they can go to when they need help with disagreements.
