Goal: Identify and Use Main Idea and Details in Reading and Writing
Sample Goal:
Client will use a pre-writing graphic organizer to plan a main idea and supporting details for a writing assignment on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.

Therapy Phases:
- Main Idea in Pictures: Client will use a short phrase to identify the main idea of a single picture (such as by saying “apple” or “football game” when describing pictures of those things) on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
- Main Idea in Sentences: Client will use a short phrase to identify the main idea of a single written sentence on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
- Diagram a Sentence into Main Idea and Details: When provided with a written sentence, Client will identify which part represents the main idea and which part represents the detail(s) on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
- Diagram a Paragraph into Main Idea and Details: When provided with a written paragraph, Client will identify which part represents the main idea and which part(s) represents the detail(s) on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
- State Main Idea and Details in Sentences: After reading a written paragraph, Client will re-state the main idea and supporting details in his/her own words on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
- Use Main Idea and Details to Plan for Writing: Client will use a pre-writing graphic organizer to plan a main idea and supporting details for a writing assignment on at least 4 of 5 observed opportunities.
What’s Next?
- Once the client has mastered the concepts of main ideas and details, they can be used throughout the client’s reading and writing assignments. Work with classroom teachers or other educators to identify where the client still needs to use the concepts of main ideas and details in his/her school work.
