  • Younger Kids:
    • Use first words that are used by typically developing kids

    • Offer synonyms, categories, more specific terms for words that they already know
  • Older Kids:
    • Active processing of new vocabulary words
      • Use semantic maps and word webs: My Word Webs for Vocab
      • Talk about features of a word
      • Use it in different contexts
      • Talk about synonyms/antonyms
      • Use the word in a sentence and have the child decide if it was used appropriately or not
    • Teach them to ask an adult if they come across a word they don’t know
