Emotional Components of Therapy:

  • Practice desensitization activities outside of the room by having the child pseudo-stutter (on purpose) in other situations.
  • Have the child talk to others that he trusts about how he feels about stuttering.
  • Have the child practice self-disclosure about his stuttering to others around him.

Fluency and Stuttering Strategies

  • Send homework where the child must read sentences with specific strategies in different settings (at school, at home).
  • Have the child pick specific times during the day that he will practice a specific fluency-shaping strategy and have adults remind him.
  • Give him one stuttering-modification strategy to try every time he stutters between your sessions and have him write/talk about how it went.
  • Create a cue that a trusted adult or peer can give him to remind him to use a strategy.
