I have a 5th grade student who is being seen privately as well as in the school, where I work. Her private SLP asked if I could write a goal for her this year on using “can” vs. “could” and “will” vs. “would.”  I haven’t a clue as to what materials I would use or how to target this. I could use some help!

Look Up the Rules for Can vs. Could and Will vs. Would:

Observe the Child to Figure Out Which of Those Rules She’s Violating

Use informal language sampling with leading questions if needed to elicit the different versions of these verbs.  Or, ask that other SLP

Write the Goal for the Specific Uses of Will vs. Would or Can vs. Could

When given an incomplete sentence, ____ will complete the sentence by correctly choosing between “will” and “would” when expressing future tense and expressing wishes or desires on 80% of observed opportunities.

Explicitly Teach the Rules of When to Use Each One

Create a chart with “will” and “would” and write when to use each one below it

Have the Child Complete Sentences with the Correct One

Use the chart as a reference at first and then remove the chart

Correct the Child in Conversation
