1. Teach regular pronouns, like “he”, “she”, “I”, etc.

2. Teach child about the difference between subject and object (subject is the person doing something and object is the person who is having something done to them).

3. Diagram sentences by identifying the subject and object in the sentence.  Ask questions like “who is the person doing something?” and “who is the person having something done to him?”

4. Choose one pronoun and talk about how it changes if it’s the object or subject (example: he/him)

5. Offer sentences with blanks and have one card that says “he” and another that says “him”.  Help the child place the correct card in the correct spot in the sentence.  Each sentence should have a place for both words (like “he is throwing it to him”).

6. Once this is mastered, show the child pictures with two boys doing something (or two girls, etc. to work on other pronouns) and have the child form a sentence with the correct pronouns.

7. Once this is mastered, monitor for errors during conversational speech.  Point out errors and see if the child can correct them.

8.  Then, move on to another set of pronouns.
