Overcoming oral defensiveness

Categories:
Age Group: /
Resouce Types:

  • Check with dentists to make sure there aren’t sensitive gums or teeth, check with OT to make sure there aren’t other sensory issues that can be addressed with an overall sensory diet
  • Use textured spoons with the pureed foods to increase tolerance to other textures
  • Desensitize with other objects like gum massagers and chewy toys.  Have the child put it in his mouth himself or you can do it
  • Slowly and gradually change the texture of the foods he’s eating (slowly puree it less and less)
  • Use foods he will tolerate to introduce one’s he won’t (a small, soft piece of another food in his puree)
  • Try touching, pushing on, or massaging sensitive areas directly before food is introduced to desensitize
  • Explain to the child what you’re doing and why
  • Offer rewards if they comply with the therapies
  • Use visual and auditory aids like “first, then” boards and counting to a certain number to indicate the exercise is over
  • Decrease sensory defensiveness with other body parts as well (playing with or touching various foods and other textures)
  • Try blowing bubbles or whistles to decrease sensitivity
