Topic Maintenance for Distractible Older Children

1.) Talk about topic maintenance and why it is important.

2.) Practice in speech room

  • Group / Pairs of students if possible, if not, use yourself as partner
  • Buzzer (app or actual thing) in middle
  • Place topic card in middle
  • Each person talks about topic.  If the other person strays, you push the buzzer
  • Provide distractions to make it harder

3.) Practice out of speech room

  • Do some activity in other locations, like lunch room or classroom where there are more distractions
  • Add peers if possible

4.)  Provide reminders during conversational speech
