Using AAC:

  • Have the child feel real objects and indicate using body language which one she wants
  • Attach small 3D replicas of what she wants to AAC buttons and have her feel, then push

Using Visual Supports:

  • If the child has some use of his vision, use large pictures and enlarge anything visual that you use (for example, following directions)
  • If the child has no use of vision, provide 3D representations of visual items, like visual schedules and prompts (tangible symbols)

Participation and Literacy:

  • Use 3D objects to help a child attend to books read aloud.  For example, the child can hold a turkey stuffed animal when reading a story about turkeys.
  • Give the child something to do with her hands during classroom activities that are typically auditory/visual-only.  For example, the child could hold a model of a fire truck when the teacher is talking about the upcoming trip to the fire station.
