Normal vs Due To Sensory or Motor Problems
- Normal – Clears mouth after meal
- Abnormal – Leaves food behind
- Abnormal – Less of a problem with mouth cleaning with highly flavored foods
- Abnormal – Highly sensitive to any oral stimulation like tooth-brushing
Treatment
- If caused by poor sensory awareness
– Use foods that are spicy, crunchy, cold, carbonated
-Chew ice chips
-Small mirror at table to check mouth
-Vibrator massager on lips/tongue before meals - If caused by poor oral movement/chewing problems
-Vibrating massager before meals to increase tone
-Brush sides of tongue during tooth brushing
-Strong and frequent sensory stimulation on inside of cheeks (pushing with toothbrush)
